Spy/career visit reflection

Our first field trip in the digital safari academy for the juniors finally happened. All of us were wanting to go on a field trip for quite some time now and we finally had one. Our morning started off by getting to school being in the cold. Me and my friends were talking about where we all were going and thinking about all the cool work and projects that they have made and expecting to see something really amazing that will blow our mind away. The juniors were divided into three groups that went to a post production place, and TV/ commercial broadcasting place, and a production studio housing film place. In my group we went to San Fransisco to a post production place called Spy where they have worked on commercials, movies, and many other amazing cool jobs that they enjoy doing.

As my group was at Spy, we were able to sit down and talk to an employee about what his job was and ask him questions about his work life. The employee’s name was Darren and his job title is a creative director/flame operator where Darren oversees the creative team to help develop the agency’s creative product for clients. As a flame operator Darren is responsible for being a production of 3D Stereoscopic and HD visual effects for a fast-paced broadcast environment. After talking to Darren for an hour we talked to another employee which was a flame artist and his job is to create exciting and complex commercial spots and lead a team and / or collaborate with other team members on projects from concept to delivery. After going on this field trip I learned a ton of many amazing career fields in the multimedia industry and even new jobs being made every year with the fascinating work that people do in tv, commercials, and big hit movies such as Iron Man, Avatar, and working on the next movie Priest which will be coming in march.

After this going on this Field trip to Spy my mind was racing through careers in the industry that this has changed my perspective in what I want to do for the rest of my life and some day have a family and being able to provide for them. In this point in my life i want to research many multimedia based careers to where it comes to VFX editing, flame artist, colorist, and graphic design. Its my junior year and still have half of this year and my final year of high school coming my way and also thinking about college of where to even go.

Today is the last day to write for my extra credit in English. Today I am thankful that I am blessed with the things I have accomplished so far in my life so far. I am also thankful who the person I am that sometimes I’m even amazed on how much I have grown up to be. Sometimes I think to myself, do I act my age? because I know I am a well mannered, humble, respectful, relentless person with many expectations to meet. If I were to ask someone that knows me and has seen me grow up, it would have to be my family and friends.

Today I am thankful to be living in a house with four sides and a roof. I am thankful to have this because i know families out there in the world that don’t have a home to live in of their own. People like this often have to stay in homeless shelters from to another like a snail or even worse , having to live in their car everyday. I would feel sad if I had to live in my own car with no where to live but driving. Luckily there are organizations in our community that people have a warm meal and a place to stay with their family or themselves. It is also really great how other organizations have helped like collecting old clothes that people don’t use anymore or even fit them. Other organizations help collect food such as cans of veggies, fruits, and other food that are donated by people in the community for those who cant afford to buy food. It makes a great difference for people like us to be thankful and generous for donating things like this to people in need.

The Legacy of Imperialism project

In my last two weeks of school a lot of challenges are facing me. Our major project in the the Digital Safari Academy known as The Legacy of Imperialism project. For the past second semester 14 groups chose a country to help its need and problems to be fixed and how we as a group can help them improve. In some areas of the project was hard for half of us and stressful to handle. In these 14 groups they consist of four or three people targeting their country. In our group is Britanny Castillo, Kharisma Rodriguez, and me(Mario Jerez). Our group is targeting Uganda to help its combating of diseases and improving agriculture. In the end of this project the groups competed and went to Diablo valley college to present in front of four judges and our class mates. All the presenters did really good when they went up especially a few of the trade marketing projects and public services announcement. In the end of the presentations the judges chose 6 groups to be funded. our group was chosen as wellas Angola, Botswana, Togo, and Sierra Leone.

Career Exploration Refection

In our teenage lives sometimes we predict what we want as our future career and we think about how to pursue it. At times some of us have no clue. Luckily there are career explorations field trips that help me figure out what I want to pursue in my life. Our sophomore Digital Safari Academy class visited two different TV stations and one graphic design & broad casting studio. On my field trip a group of us went to the KQED TV station.

To start off with KQED is located in San Francisco, California. This organization is a nice place to work and shows that it’s professional in the television industry. One aspect that caught my eye was how KQED is a nonprofit organization which runs from donations and how they like to say “viewers like you”. KQED has been around since the 1950’s and has evolved by having five different channels divided in HD (high definition), children’s programming, world and Spanish language. In addition KQED has its own radio station which features topics like news, public affairs, and cultural affairs programming its currently the most-listened-to public radio station in the country, reaching over 745,000 listeners each week. What I also appreciated was that they do not discriminate by race, religion, background or gender. Plus there are eco-friendly, and use solar panels to save money on energy.

The environment at KQED is a quiet, calm, and mellow atmosphere to work in. I expected the working atmosphere to be active. I expected to see filming in action but I didn’t notice that so much. Another aspect that was there was an age gap. For example, I only noticed employees in their late forties and fifties; I did not see any young employees at KQED. To me it seems that there is a variety of the older ages at KQED that love what they do at work, such as being a director’s assistant, being inside the radio station room, or even being the CEO of the TV station.

In conclusion, KQED is a great and professional place to be working; since they believe in every person has equal opportunities to succeed. It’s known to be the most currently listened radio station in the country, reaching 745,000 listeners a week. What really caught my attention was how KQED is a non-profit organization where they are based on donations which amazed me how so many people donated to KQED. To me KQED seems like a nice place to work at because everyone is friendly and love what they love to do. For my instance KQED seems nice but on my opinion I want to work in a place where there is a lot of energy because I can express myself a whole lot more where I can be active.

College Visit Reflective Essay

There comes a time in high school when students start to think about college and what they want to study and the big question is “How do I get into college?” When I visited UC Berkeley I expected to see a big classroom full of students and seeing them studying outside. In addition, I was surprised to see middle aged people taking classes and students telling others about their clubs and inviting them to join. As I was taking a tour around Berkeley, our tour guide was giving us useful information on how to get into universities such as admissions and registrations. For example, our tour guide was telling us what type of classes we should be taking. She also did mention that we can live on campus or commute back and forth. Most importantly the costs of college, receiving scholarships and grants, and finical aid.

As I stated in the first paragraph, I expected to get a look of a big classroom full of students while the class was in session, but as the tour went on I noticed that I didn’t see many students outside studying or reading as I thought they would. I also wanted to catch a glimpse of where the students lived on campus because you can live on campus or commute back and forth, plus I think it’s just an hour or a half an hour away from where they live. Our tour guide was also telling us how campus life is. It’s like freedom but you need to learn how to manage your time correctly. Furthermore, she told us that there are fun activities to do on campus. Another part of Berkeley that I expected to see was where the fraternities were located and to observe what they were like. Lastly, I expected to see a little bit more nationalities, not just Caucasians, but Latinos, African Americans, and other different backgrounds as well.

There were a lot of aspects of UC Berkeley that I expected, but there were a few things that surprised me too. I never thought students with disabilities could take courses here as well. Secondly, I was astonished to see middle aged people taking classes at Berkeley. Furthermore, I was amazed to hear students sing a song called the “California Drinking Song” it sounded funny but it was great. In conclusion, this experience of visiting UC Berkeley was amazing and informative to me. This experience will get me to think where I want to go for college.
